Plot
Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is a divorced basketball coach who buys an antique wooden box for his daughter Em (Natasha Calis) at a yard sale. Em becomes obsessed with the box, which has Hebrew inscriptions on it. She opens it and finds a tooth, a ring, a dead moth, and a wooden figurine. She begins to act strangely, such as stabbing her father with a fork, killing a moth with her bare hand, and speaking in Polish.
Clyde's ex-wife Stephanie (Kyra Sedgwick) blames him for Em's behavior and takes custody of her and her older sister Hannah (Madison Davenport). Clyde researches the box and learns that it contains a dybbuk, an evil spirit that can possess a human host. He seeks help from a Jewish professor, who tells him to find someone who can perform an exorcism.
Clyde goes to a Hasidic community in Brooklyn and meets Tzadok (Matisyahu), a young rabbi who agrees to help him. They drive to Stephanie's house, where Em has become more violent and demonic. They manage to subdue her and take her to a hospital, where Tzadok performs the exorcism ritual. The dybbuk fights back and tries to escape through Em's mouth, but Tzadok catches it in the box and seals it.
Em wakes up and hugs her father, seemingly free from the dybbuk. However, as they leave the hospital, the box falls from Tzadok's hands and breaks open, releasing the dybbuk again. The film ends with the sound of Em's voice saying "Daddy, I'm scared."
Review
The Possession is a decent horror film that offers some genuine scares and suspense. The film benefits from the performances of the cast, especially Natasha Calis as the possessed Em. She portrays the transition from a sweet girl to a terrifying creature convincingly. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick also deliver solid performances as the concerned parents who try to save their daughter.
The film also explores the theme of family and divorce, showing how Clyde and Stephanie struggle to cope with their separation and their children's well-being. The film does not demonize either parent, but rather shows their flaws and strengths. The film also incorporates elements of Jewish folklore and mythology, which adds some originality and authenticity to the story.
However, the film also suffers from some drawbacks. The film relies heavily on clichés and jump scares that are typical of the genre. The film does not offer much explanation or background for the dybbuk or the box, leaving many questions unanswered. The film also has some plot holes and inconsistencies that weaken the logic and coherence of the story. The film also has a disappointing ending that undermines the resolution and impact of the climax.
Conclusion
The Possession is a watchable horror film that has some good moments and performances, but also some flaws and shortcomings. It is not a groundbreaking or memorable film, but it is entertaining enough for fans of the genre. It is available in BRRip 720p quality with English - Hindi dual audio on various online platforms.
